FAMILY HISTORY

The first of the Nantucket Gliddens was Tobias, born in Damariscotta, Maine. He came to Nantucket and married Eunice Swain in 1808. Sadly, he was lost at sea in 1809, leaving behind Eunice and his son, Obed.

Several generations later, Sconset cod fisherman Charles S. Glidden moved his fishing shanty from Sconset to Steamboat Wharf, amidst the hustle of steamer ferries, the bustling fishing scene and, eventually, the bike shops.

Charles passed the market to his son, Walter, who passed it to his son, Walter D. Glidden Jr., who presided from 1952 to 1986, with a fine wit and trading skills honed from a stint at New York’s famed Fulton Fish Market.

David Glidden 1954-2016

David Glidden joined his father in the fishmongering trade in 1975. He learned how to cut fish, shuck clams, and negotiate with fishermen, a subtle art. David perfected his recipes for smoked bluefish pate, quahog chowder and bouillabaisse. In the year 2000, having long outgrown the Steamship Wharf location, we moved into the newly built seafood market at 115 Pleasant Street. Glidden’s now has plentiful parking, housing for seasonal workers, and a certified commercial kitchen.

Sharon Stanley, a 17 year employee, has taken on the management of the market after the tragic loss of David in April, 2016. Tobias has been helping out by cutting fish when he’s not in Boston working on fisheries issues. This summer, Carol Glidden will be at the register, ready with recipes and a cheerful smile.
